Acrylic Mediums

Acrylic mediums are not just for painting any more.

There are a number of acrylic mediums on the market for painting but for a change try a medium as a ground for drawing.  Acrylic mediums dry tough but flexible, so can be used on watercolor paper as a medium with texture that create interesting backgrounds to draw on. Fiber paste can change the texture of your paper but still have the appearance of paper.  Micaceous iron oxide, ground hematite makes a beautiful dark background with a slight metallic sheen, for light pastels. Sand acrylic medium creates a rough earthy background.  Gel mediums can have a variety of particles including marble dust, pumiced, ceramic beads, fibers and various mineral compounds. Some of the mineral types that are interesting are garnet, and ground lava stone another great dark backdrop for light pastel drawings.
Try using matte gel and create some of your own, experiment.  Matte medium works best instead of gloss gel for a drawing base because there is a slight tooth to the surface when dry where gloss is smooth and shiny.  Gel mediums can be tinted to a color of your choice by adding one part acrylic color to eight parts gel.
Suggestions for interesting line work on acrylic are charcoal, litho crayons, graphite pencils, and pastels.
Have some fun and give a few of these a try the next time you are sketching.
